What To Do When Pet Odor Won't Go Away

 

30% to 40 % of U.S. households have at least one cat or a dog in residence. They may be our best friends but they may not be best for your carpets and rugs. Pet related issues and stains can be challenging to remove, so it’s best to attack them while they are fresh.

 

Pet issues, if forgotten or never discovered, will return to haunt you. Dried urine will smell like strong ammonia when humidity is high or when the spot is rewetted.  Feces and urine can contain harmful bacteria. A spot that is small on the surface is often many times larger on the underside. The urine can damage carpet fibers, dyes, carpet backing, padding and subfloors.

 

Dried urine is often easy to smell in the humid months because the salts attract the moisture, the moisture evaporates putting out a greater proportion of odorous ammonia gas. Treating with enzymes can often control the odor. However, if the odor persists, other measures must be taken to get rid of the urine salts in and under the carpet, in the padding and in the subfloor. We can come in and take of that for you.

If the issue is very severe, restoration might be suggested which often involves the removal of the contaminated carpet and padding to mitigate the odor.

 

Depending on the extent, age and type of odor, Flying Carpet Cleaners will apply any, all or some of these steps to address the problem:

• Treat carpet with enzyme treatment

• Apply cleaning solution

• Clean carpet

• Pull up carpet to inspect back and padding

• Treat back of carpet with enzyme treatment

• Remove affected pad

• Install new tack strip

• Install new pad

• Re-assemble carpet
